Anxiety: The Great Inhibitor of Learning

There are many personal issues that can affect the ability of pupils and students to make the most of the educational opportunities available in schools.

Among these one of the most commonly identified is anxiety – a deep nervousness about what will be happening in the future.

This can affect pupils and students worried about what will happen today in school, whether they will have difficult times out of lessons, what will happen after school, and so on.

Perhaps, like many other schools we are working with you have noticed a spike in young people’s anxiety levels since the return to school after lockdown.

Anxiety is often considered alongside depression, but it is important to note the difference: anxiety is about what might happen in the future, whereas depression is a mental state affecting the individual now.

With anxiety the worry about what might happen can be justified – in which case the issue itself causing the anxiety can be dealt with. But it might be imaginary, in that the event causing the anxiety is unlikely to occur or when it does occur might not be a source of worry.

Unfortunately anxiety is rarely removed just by telling the individual that there is nothing to worry about and that their worries are groundless. However, anxiety can be overcome when the young person is helped to understand the condition and its origins.

Support and Funding

Fortunately, there are ways in which pupils and students who suffer from seemingly uncontrollable anger can be helped. Even better, there is funding available to help in work of this nature.

Indeed NLP4Kids has worked with over 100 UK schools to enable them to improve the lives of many children and families.

This includes 2 hours of fully funded practitioner support to every school that needs it with 30 days of access to an online platform of resources for a designated staff member.
