The Lake District has great attractions for school children, whatever the weather. All the attractions below can be linked together, by combining a trip on the train and a boat, your group can have a full day of fun.

Lakes Aquarium

The Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway

railwayEstablished in 1973 The Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway is a family run business steaming into the heart of the Lake District. You will find a fleet of lovingly restored and maintained steam locomotives on site, available to view in our engine shed, where our team of volunteers work alongside permanent staff to protect and improve our railway. We are proud to boast 2 magnificent restored and working Fairburn Class 4 MT tank engines – the only remaining locos of this type to survive. Haverthwaite station is also home to restaurant, shop, woodland walk, children’s adventure playground.

20 minutes along 3.5 miles of scenic line to Lake Windermere, and onwards to Lake cruise and other attractions.

World of Beatrix Potter

bp We welcome school groups from nursery upwards and can tailor your visit to ensure that your group get the most from their experience. Beatrix Potter and her stories can be linked to many areas of the National Curriculum including Literacy, History, Geography, Art and Science. Topic work based around this amazing lady can provide a wealth of learning opportunities for pupils of all ages.

Windermere Lake Cruises

lakeWindermere Lake Cruises is a leading tourist attraction operating in the heart of the Lake District sailing on England's largest lake. Steamers and Launches sail daily thoughout the year between Ambleside, Bowness and Lakeside with summer season connections for the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Steam Railway, The Lake District Visitors Centre (Brockhole), Fell Foot Country Park, The Lakeland Motor Museum, Wray Castle and Ferry House for Hilltop and Hawkshead. Group visits range from a 30 minute single sail to a full day itinerary, guides travel free.

Coach parking is available at Bowness and Lakeside with drop off at Ambleside.

Lakeland Motor Museum

museumThis unique collection of artefacts provides a great educational resource and can be used to build knowledge, skills and understanding enabling pupils to learn how the past is different to the present and to identify between ways of life at different times.

The museum is ideal for observation and comparison work and also demonstrates how, when and why advancements in technology have allowed for changes in materials, design and features, with similarities or striking differences so revealed.

Our quiz encourages engagement and stimulates learning as a fun challenge for children to seek exhibits and record their findings.
