Economics Summer School

Whether we seek understanding and control over our everyday experiences, or a framework to analyse the causes and consequences of major geopolitical events, economics often holds the key, and economic literacy is increasingly a prerequisite for being taken seriously in almost any field of work or study.

If you have wondered what it would be like to hold the levers of power at the Treasury or Bank of England, to use economic know-how to diagnose and rescue an economy in crisis, or to invest a multimillion dollar stock portfolio, then this online Economics Summer School will have something to offer.

The online Economics Summer School includes events both for those trying the subject for the first time, and for those looking to deepen their understanding. The style of learning throughout is active and engaging, focusing on real world case studies and including a variety of enjoyable economic simulations and exercises.

For 2024, our online Economics Summer School will be divided into three Parts:

Introduction to Economics (suitable for students with no previous experience of the subject), – covering core micro- and macro-economic concepts, and how governments attempt to manage the economic cycle. Perfect for those considering the subject at A Level and looking to make an informed choice, or get a head start.

Growth, Development and Inequalities – (suitable for both beginners and experienced students) – covering the economics of development, national and international migration and the distribution of wealth, both within and between economies.

Money, Capital, and Financial Markets – (suitable for both beginners and experienced students) – covering the inner workings of the financial system, what happens when it serves the economy well, and what can go wrong.

As well as gaining a good grasp of competing theoretical positions, students will also have the opportunity to engage directly with a number of particularly interesting problems within contemporary economics.

Throughout, the material studied will be related to current economic events and debates.

The tutors for this course are selected for their exceptional communication skills, outstanding academic record, and passion for sharing what they love about economics – see our tutors page for some example profiles.

Classes are kept small (maximum 12 students) to enable everyone to have their say, and give plenty of opportunities to develop and express individual ideas and questions – as well as being a great chance to make some new friends who share your academic interests.

The Summer School is ideal for any student considering a degree in economics or a related discipline, a career in finance, or who would like to understand more about the powerful economic forces which drive the world around them.

‘The Economics Summer School is incredibly useful if you’re looking to study the subject in any form at university – regardless of whether you have prior knowledge of economics, this school will further your interest in all areas of modern economics as well as introducing students to new, different, exciting concepts. And Debate Chamber do a brilliant job of managing it. Highly recommended.’

‘A highly-stimulating course and one that is enjoyable to anyone with an interest in Economics. The course balanced rigour with interactivity perfectly. Furthermore, the environment and atmosphere created by the tutors is one ideal for learning in a comprehensive and tangible manner. I would highly recommend the course, its a fantastic week!’

‘I came to this course with an interest but not formal background in Economics – I wanted to find out if it was a subject I’d like to study at A-Level. It is! I liked the way the course linked real-life examples (particularly the financial crisis) to economic theory, and the way we were challenged and encouraged to offer our opinions as to what was going on. The tutors were interesting and passionate about their subject and gave us plenty to think about. A really enjoyable week.’
