Groupwork

Welcome to Groupwork

Groupwork is the only British-based journal specialising in social applications of groupwork. It is peer reviewed and international in coverage, with articles on all the settings in which groupwork is practised, including health, nursing, occupational therapy, staff development, mental health, counselling, child care and education, youth and community work, social work, and criminal justice.

Our fast track publication philosophy ensures that material is topical and relevant, as well as meeting the highest academic and professional standard.

INFORMATON FOR AUTHORS Information about how to submit to the Journal is available for download below. Authors should submit papers here.

Call for papers: Technology and Groupwork
The use of digital technology in the delivery of a whole range of health and social services has increased dramatically in the past decade, particularly in the period since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. This special issue will showcase how technology is not only changing, but reshaping the delivery of services and the experiences of people who use them – in this case, the experiences of groupwork participants.
We invite proposals for critically informed papers describing the use of technology in the delivery of groupwork. Papers may cover research, practice or policy issues.

Abstracts of up to 300 words should be sent to Jane McLaughlin (jm4whitingbirch@aol.co.uk) to arrive by 31st March 2023.

2025 Seventh Groupwork Student Essay Competition Winner
The call for submissions for the Seventh Student Essay Competition will be issued soon.
The next prize will be awarded in June 2026.

Articles should preferably be submitted using PKP, the online submission system we use for Groupwork. Click on this link to start the submission process.

You will be asked to register as a user, after which the process is relatively straightforward. If you have 'technical' questions about the submission process, please email David Whiting: davidwhiting@whitingbirch.net

If you wish to discuss content issues before submitting a paper, please contact the Co-Editor: Gloria Kirwan gloria.kirwan@mu.ie.

Articles are welcome from all those who work with groups in any discipline: whether practitioners, trainers, researchers, users, or consultants. Accounts of innovations, research findings on existing practice, policy issues affecting groupwork, and discussions of conceptual developments are all relevant. Groupwork with clients, users, professional teams, or community groups fall within our range.

Length: Full length articles; normally of around 4500 words, should show the context of practice and relate this to existing knowledge. We also accept brief contributions which need focus only on the issue at hand.

Presentation: Documents should be in Word format and forwarded as an email attachment to the Editors. The name(s) of the author(s) should not appear in the text or in running heads. A title page should be included, with name of the author(s), a correspondence and an email address. A summary of no more than 200 words should also be provided, together with six key words.

We use a Harvard system of referencing. References within the text should be cited by giving the author’s name and year of publication, eg. (Smith, 1928). Specific page numbers should be cited after a direct quotation. Those works cited in the text (and no others) should be listed at the end of the text in alphabetical order by author's name using the journal’s standard conventions.

More detailed information on manuscript submission is available on the Author Resources page.

Assessment: All articles are submitted to peer review by two assessors, and the editor takes final responsibility for the decisions that follow.
